David C. Larned, M.D. – Eye Surgeon in Wilmington, Delaware
Dr. David C. Larned, a native of southern New Jersey, was a three-sport letterman in high school, captaining the football and baseball teams. While playing college football, he sustained an injury ending his athletic career which then opened the door to his pursuit of medicine. A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Lafayette College majoring in chemistry Dr. Larned accepted a Navy scholarship to Cornell University Medical College.
He spent the next ten years in the Navy; interning at San Diego Naval Hospital, a year at sea aboard the USS New Orleans as the Senior Medical Officer including a tour to the Western Pacific.
He was offered an ophthalmology residency at Bethesda Naval Hospital which he completed in 1982 following which he was a staff ophthalmologist at Pensacola, Florida Naval Hospital.
While at the naval hospital he was offered the lone fellowship in Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery under Dr. Joseph C. Flanagan at the Wills Eye Hospital, Philadelphia, which he completed in 1985. He was then the head of the Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery division of the Ophthalmology department at Bethesda Naval Hospital.
With a growing family he made the difficult decision to leave the Navy and settled in Wilmington, Delaware where he has maintained a growing practice in ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive surgery. His specialty focuses on abnormalities of the eyelids including malpositions, trauma, infections, tearing abnormalities and tumors. He has performed over 20,000 cases.
Dr. Larned is pleased to resume his professional relationship with Dr. S. Gregory Smith with whom he previously collaborated for several years.
