S. Gregory Smith, MD, is a renowned eye surgeon who is trained in a range of refractive surgical procedures and corneal transplantation. He has been performing eye surgery since the early 1980s and boasts more than 25 years of experience. Throughout the course of his prolific career, Dr. Smith has traveled the world educating other eye surgeons, including more than 500 physicians in Southeast Asia and hundreds of others in Thailand. In addition to helping Wilmington patients enhance their vision, Dr. Smith is an attending surgeon at the famed Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia, where he has been teaching for more than 20 years.
Dr. Smith was among the first surgeons in the country to be trained in phacoemulsification cataract surgery and was asked to train other eye surgeons who traveled to Minneapolis to learn this new technique under his mentorship. He has brought several new techniques to the United States, including the small-incision technique used to open the lens capsule and implant a foldable lens implant during cataract surgery. In addition, Dr. Smith was invited to travel to Germany and Hungary to study the latest refractive surgery techniques with the world’s leading ophthalmologists.
Dr. Smith is involved in the latest research and ophthalmic advancements. He has served as a consultant to numerous Fortune 500 companies and is frequently asked to lecture at national and international meetings and events. Dr. Smith has authored numerous articles, books and book chapters on subjects pertaining to eye surgery and eye health. Dr. Smith obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree with distinction from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor and his medical degree from Wayne State University School of Medicine. Following medical school, Dr. Smith underwent initial medical training at the Sacred Heart Medical Center before completing his ophthalmology residency at the University of Minnesota. Although his formal education has long since culminated, Dr. Smith remains dedicated to the pursuit of excellence in the field of vision correction through continued research of visual health.
