Karin E. Thomas, M.D. – Eye Surgeon in Wilmington, Delaware
Dr. Karin Thomas grew up in Wilmington, Delaware, as did her parents and grandparents. She is a 3rd generation Delaware physician. Dr. Thomas graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Delaware’s Honors Program and attended the prestigious Thomas Jefferson Medical College under a Navy scholarship. Subsequently, she trained as an Internal Medicine intern before completing her Ophthalmology residency at Naval Medical Center San Diego.
Dr. Thomas completed her two year fellowship in Cornea, Refractive Surgery and Research at University of California San Diego. She spent 25 years in the Navy traveling the world, including Okinawa, Iwakuni, Korea, Australia, and Afghanistan, amongst other places.
During her time in the Navy, she attended flight school in Pensacola, Florida and served as a Flight Surgeon for the Marines with VMF A (A W)-242. She flew in more than 14 different types of military aircraft and loved flying so much, she obtained a private pilot’s license on her own.
Dr. Thomas spent much of her time in the Navy on research endeavors, including refractive surgery, nomograms for improving cataract outcomes, and night vision projects. Her true joy was teaching residents. Her greatest research endeavor was helping to build the world’s first biosynthetic artificial cornea, now undergoing FDA trials. She has written multiple papers and given international lectures on her work. She retired as a Navy Captain (0-6).
Dr. Thomas attributes her gentle bedside nature from spending years in the Wilmington hospitals as a child with her father, an internist. Her mother is a retired minister, who taught her the values of fellwship, trust, and faith. Dr. Thomas treats all patients as if they were members of her own family. Her patients describe her as kind, compassionate and hard-working, as well as an exceptional surgeon. She is Board Certified by the American Board of Ophthalamology.
She loves the beach, gardening, reading, fishing, and still keeps up with her relatives and friends in Milton, Delaware, where her grandmother grew up.
